A while back I was on YouTube when I struck gold in a piece of music by . I usually steer clear of the comments, but one caught my eye: 'like God seeing his reflection in the water,' it read. Like God! God's reflection! Okay, I know. Going after YouTube commenters is like going after the Westboro Baptist Church or something. The nesting mallard's sitting duck. My point is that is the sort of thing that gets said about music like Richter's. I've certainly fallen foul before... Read More »
In January, the German-born composer Max Richter completed a task that had long felt like a dream: He heard the music of Memoryhouse, his first album under his own name, played in front of an audience in a proper auditorium. What's more, the show in London's large Barbican Hall was not only sold out but an event important enough to necessitate the second vinyl reissue of the album... Read More »
Buy / Listen: 7Digital | Amazon | eMusic | We7 | Spotify Originally part of a score for a contemporary ballet, a collaboration between the choreographer Wayne McGregor and artist Julian Opie, prolific composer/producer Max Richter has now expanded the music contained within Infra. While classical in construction (string quintet, piano) Richter weaves many elements of found sounds into the album, and it's the fuzzy sound of morse code and broken voices on a long wave radio that opens the album... Judging on talent alone, the British-German composer Max Richter deserves as much ink as Nico Muhly. Both these young musicians have made a successful transition from the study of serious modern classical music to bring in a wider, indie-music-listening audience. Muhly through arrangements for a variety of well-known indie rock groups and incessant Tweeting; Richter, in a more modest way, by releasing conceptual albums that are accessible to anyone with the inclination to seek them out... Max Richter faces the depressing double-bind that all modern composers do if they manage to appeal to wider audiences and gain some attention. Too austere or clever, too off-putting or complicated and he'll be branded another avant garde intellectual "normal" listeners couldn't (and shouldn't, the subtext runs) get into; too obviously melodic or moving, too consonant or broadly appealing and suddenly he's a New Age-y schmaltz factory "discerning" listeners know better than to pay attention to... Max Richter's own brand of neoclassicism evolves out of ambience. Ambience is the spawn. On previous albums we've heard the usual staples of poetry and rain; this album grows out of a steady, bubbling beep and fuzz. Perhaps a dystopia shared with the woebegone little machinations of Johann Johannsson's IBM 1401, A User's Manual. Similar to the IBMs, the Infra robot-children seem to stagger up onto tiny aluminium feet and begin to grasp emotion. They play the saddest chords... Read More »
Summary: Richter chooses to leave his cell phone at home Pardon me for stroking my own ego, but I believe that I have more in common with modern composer Max Richter than the typical everyday man. Case in point: We're both minimal. We like staying low-key, unnoticed in the party... Read More »
Summary: Long drives into the night, heavy thoughts weighing on your mind, and The Blue Notebooks playing in the background. I could finish this review in a sentence, writing out why The Blue Notebooks is a classic in nine or so words, or thereabouts - at least in the context of its sound, perhaps... Read More »
Max Richter's music could broadly be classified as neo-classical, or ambient, or electro-acoustic chamber music. These descriptors give you an idea of his sound, but they don't tell you what the music feels like. So while I can recognize those generic touchstones, I hear Richter's music first as night music, sound that makes darkness feel alive. I don't tend to associate music with a mood or a time of day or a season, but I like to listen to his albums when I'm working late... Read More »

&appId;&version; Acclaimed neoclassical composer, pianist, producer, remixer, collaborator of note (having worked with Future Sound of London, Robert Wyatt et al) - one hesitates to label <span>Max Richter</span> as an enigma, but he is without question one of the most prolific, innovative and interesting musical artists of his generation. His debut Royal Albert Hall performance will bring to life The Four Seasons Recomposed, his groundbreaking re-imagining of Vivaldi's masterpiece, arguably one of the most recognisable pieces of music ever written. Renowned British violinist Daniel Hope and ... RAH performance will cap what has already been quite a year for the German-born composer, which has seen him sign an exclusive deal with revered classical label Deutsche Grammophon, renew his collaboration with choreographer Wayne MacGregor on a new full-length work for The Royal Ballet and finish work on a new album, set for release in early 2015. Given the prestigious venue, its peerless atmosphere and the intensity of Richter's exquisitely realised music, Saturday night promises to be very special indeed. sophomore album Lookaftering 35 years after her debut. Now Bunyan has announced her third album, titled Heartleap, and it sounds even more exciting. Lookaftering had all the qualities of a long-overdue return and had the personnel to match: Devendra Banhart, Joanna Newsom, Robert Kirby, and produced by <span>Max Richter</span>. Heartleap, on the other hand, was mostly recorded and produced by Bunyan herself, alone in her home studio, Pitchfork reports. No other details yet, but this is really something to look forward to. Heartleap will be release by FatCat. Vashti Bunyan Announces Third Album Heartleap Read More »
